"Each year, personal finance company SmartAsset ranks the state’s counties based on four factors: housing equity, academic performance, childcare costs, and access to recreation and community centers. The highest-ranking counties in the scoring were SmartAsset’s best places to raise a family.

Hendricks County, located just west of Indianapolis, claimed the top spot in the 2025 rankings thanks to high marks in all four categories. SmartAsset notes that Hendricks County benefits from proximity to Indianapolis, has a high standard of living, and offers a mix of suburban and rural living, making it appealing to a wide range of families."
