Every February, Fond du Lac kicks off Wisconsin's 16-day sturgeon spearing season with the Sturgeon Spectacular, a three-day winter festival that draws 10,000 to 15,000 participants to the ice on Lake Winnebago. Lake sturgeon are a 200-million-year-old species that can reach 7 feet and 240 pounds, and spearing them through hand-cut holes in the ice has been a Winnebago tradition for over a century. Now in its 11th year as an organized event, the festival layers a Wisconsin state snow-sculpting championship, a community-wide Bloody Mary contest, outdoor curling, and Spearing and Beering events around the main ritual. All run by a 501(c)(3) on volunteer labor.
