Established 150 years ago, Birmingham, Alabama, quickly became known as “The Magic City” due to rapid growth of its iron and steel industry. The moniker was popularized by James Powell, president of the Elyton Land Company. At the turn of the 20th century, downtown Birmingham area experienced a renaissance, becoming one of the country’s most impressive downtown areas, further solidifying the nickname.
