Plainfield is just a stone's throw from Indianapolis, so you get that small-town vibe without being too far removed from the big-city action. The cost of living here is super reasonable compared to Indy itself, with nice homes going for a pretty penny less. And when you're not clocked in working remotely, there's plenty to keep you busy right in Plainfield. The locally-owned restaurant scene is top-notch. Their prime rib is to die for. For something a little trendier, Brew Link Brewing has amazing craft beers and gourmet bar food. As for recreational offerings, you're just a couple of miles from Hummel Park which has a wooden pedestrian bridge, playgrounds, a splash pad, an amphitheater for live music and a sledding hill. The town also has a huge recreation and aquatic center with basketball courts, exercise areas, pools, an indoor play area, community rooms, a media center and fitness trails. There are also a ton of community events happening all year round in the charming downtown area. Now for families, the Plainfield school system is really solid. Both Plainfield High School and the middle/elementary schools get high ratings—lots of AP classes, extracurriculars and strong sports programs. The town in general just has such a family-friendly, safe atmosphere that makes it ideal for raising kids. Between affordable living, dining/entertainment options, recreational activities and great schools, Plainfield offers remote workers and families the total package. Paoli

As the county seat of Orange County, Paoli provides residents with plenty of outdoor recreation from enjoying a hike in Pioneer Mothers Memorial Forest to shredding the gnar at Paoli Peaks. Check out the third-oldest operational courthouse in Indiana, which affords an incredible view of Courthouse Square from its balcony. The surrounding Courthouse Square offers boutiques, antique stores, restaurants, and a barber shop. Enjoy a bite at the deli, join the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, and purchase local produce from Paoli’s co-op, Lost River Market & Deli. Keep an eye on their events calendar for upcoming farm-to-table dinners. Co-op makers produce many of the products sold there in the community kitchen — a resource for culinary entrepreneurs, bakers, caterers, and more — at the First Presbyterian Church of Paoli. About an hour northwest in Daviess County is Amish Country, where you can enjoy shopping, eating a family-style Amish dinner, or interacting with the Amish community. The annual PaoliFest celebrates music, art, and community with performances, jam sessions, and collaborative art-making. Visit the historic Lindley House, listed on the National Register of Historical Places. Imbibe at wineries on the Indiana Uplands Wine Trail. In nearby French Lick, check out the West Baden Springs Hotel’s immense atrium. City amenities and an international airport live just an hour away in Louisville, Kentucky.

Owensboro

Owensboro, Kentucky, sits in the crook of the bend of the Ohio River, which led 18th-century settlers to originally call it “Yellowbanks,” for the yellow sands located along the river. The long, hot summers provide outdoor enthusiasts plenty of opportunities for water sports, hiking, biking, or simply enjoying one of the area’s many parks. Nature enthusiasts might also enjoy the Western Kentucky Botanical Garden or visiting the World’s Largest Sassafras Tree. The city is also known for the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and Museum, the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art, and Owensboro Museum of Science and History. Wineries, distilleries, farms, and orchards offer tours, and the city hosts the Owensboro PumpkinFest each year. The Owensboro-Daviess Regional Airport is located just minutes from the business district in Owensboro. The airport offers flights to Sanford and Orlando, Florida, on Allegiant Airlines and to St. Louis and Nashville on Cape Air. The Louisville, Kentucky, airport is located less than 100 miles from Owensboro.

Monroe

Located on the western shores of Lake Erie, Monroe is Michigan’s third-oldest community. As the largest city in Monroe County, historic preservation efforts and economic growth afford modern amenities while preserving the past.

Known for its military conflicts during the War of 1812, Monroe is home to River Raisin National Battlefield Park. Take in a show at the River Raisin Center for the Arts or tour the Monroe County Historical Museum.

Explore the Mark G. Worrell Memorial Trail at Frenchman’s Bend or walk the River Raisin Heritage Trail in Sterling State Park, enjoying the stunning shores of Lake Erie along the way. Encompassing 1,300 acres, Sterling State Park includes seven miles of trails and more than a mile of sandy beach. While you’re there, enjoy lakeside and lagoon fishing, as well as lakeside camping.
 
Visit the nearby Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge, the only one of its kind in North America.

Historic downtown Monroe boasts many food options, including bars, bakeries and diners. A seasonal farmers market showcases county-grown fruits, vegetables and flowers, as well as homemade crafts.
Monroe schools feature mainstream public schools, Catholic institutions, and Monroe County Community College.

Rich history influences much of Monroe’s architecture, with most residential homes constructed in Colonial Revival, Victorian and Craftsman styles.

Less than an hour’s drive from Detroit, and just 44 miles from Windsor, Canada, Monroe is an ideal location for day trips and adventures. Need to book a flight? The Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport offers direct flights to many locations including Baltimore, Maryland, Austin, Texas and New York, New York.

Mount Pleasant

Mount Pleasant is truly a gem located in the Northeast part of Texas – just a short two-hour drive from the Dallas-Forth Worth area. 

But why leave this beautiful “micropolitan” when everything you could possibly need (or want) is within city limits? Globally-recognized businesses like Pilgrim’s Pride, Priefert Farm & Ranch Manufacturing, and Big Tex Trailer World have all made Mount Pleasant home – not to mention ​​Sweet Shop USA, the largest handmade chocolate manufacturer in the country. Those with a sweet tooth can pop in for a sample or to purchase its delicious chocolates. 

When you’re ready to shop, you’re in luck. Mount Pleasant’s historical Downtown District holds the distinction of being both a National and Texas Main Street City and offers plentiful shops, boutiques, eateries, and seasonal events such as Christmas on the Square and the Annual Wine Festival.

Parkville

A historic city in Southern Platte County, Parkville is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. Situated on the banks of the Missouri River, Parkville offers small-town living and community pride. 

Home of two nature sanctuaries, Parkville’s recreational opportunities provide fun for all ages and fitness levels. Hike three miles on the Jim Reed Trail System at Parkville Nature Sanctuary. Located 18 miles southwest, in Kansas City, Missouri, visit the National World War 1 Museum and Memorial. North Platte
